Book Review: 漢聲精選 Han Sheng Collection

This 70 book collection is a BEAST. I was super excited to skim through everything and provide a quick overview. My favorite ones are the Human Body collection that I listed below because my kids are into stuff like looking at blood and eyes and veins. However, what I’ve found is that this company only does healthy positive stories. There aren’t stories where you can’t tell what they are trying to teach. I think I originally wanted this entire set for it’s educational value. They are picture books but they aren’t all easy picture books with just cute stories. They are actually done so that each book (if science focused) is dense but easily understood. As for the the pure storybooks, they consist of the “classics” written in the most charming manner. You just don’t find books like these anymore and I really love this set. It’s one of those sets I would pass down to my grandchildren!

I’ve split the collection into 6 categories:

  1. No Words – because I think you’d want to know which books actually only have pictures.
  2. No Zhuyin 注音 – these have all characters without zhuyin. Stories are mature and super meaningful.
  3. Science – Human Body – all ages but to read alone, 5-7+ (depends on the subject)
  4. Science – Nature, Other – all ages but to read alone 5-7+ (depends on the subject)
  5. Picture Books for Under 7 – these are story based
  6. Picture Books for 7-12 – these are story based mixed with science based

Please note: some colors may be off because the computer was trying to “color” enhance scans and some enhancements made some picture books brighter but for others, washed out the color.

6. Picture Books For Over 7 Years Old

I didn’t have time to make a video for this but I actually really really really love this section. If you look at the images below, you’ll see how much your child can learn and they put it in an interesting manner. Every book is super detailed with tons of information. I wouldn’t categorize this all as “picture books” per se but more a mix of information based knowledge books that are picture book style.

地球

宇宙

世界的一天 – I have to say that I really like the following book. Every spread give you 8 boxes of what people are doing in the day from “different” countries and the story continues on each page with the different countries. It shows diversity in culture and knowledge. This one is really just a classic and I would hunt this one down if I didn’t have it.

安安 – This one is a sad book about cancer. The thing is the ending is happy so the boy recovers but it shows all the hardships he went through. Not a book I’d just read “for fun” but for your mid to upper elementary kids, it’s a good way for them to show empathy for those that have sicknesses and what they’re going through.

顏色是怎麼來的?

你們說,這片草原美不美?- this one has a crazy good story to it. It starts with a piece of beautiful land. People live on it. They build and build and build until the land is not beautiful anymore because of all the buildings and pollution and then they end up moving away … and “restarting” on another beautiful land (thereby polluting another piece of beautiful green land… again. The cycle continues.
